Especially for Dania

Thank you Ms. McShane! The article "The Best Ways to Teach Young Newcomers" was very interesting. I liked reading the article because people were invited to comment on the issue. Also many experts in the education of children learning English commented on the article. I disagreed with the practices of the Virginia school that separated students who are children of immigrants from other students. I don't believe that their teaching method would be effective. I believe there should be a combination of bilingual instruction and regular classes for children of immigrants. I don't believe students should be completely separated from their peers. Children of immigrants should have classes with students that also know the English language so they can learn through experience. I agreed with the points Marcelo Suárez-Orozco and Carola Suárez-Orozco made about dual-immersion programs. They are the co-directors of Immigration Studies at New York University. Both believe students should learn half the time in English and half in their native language with half the class being native English speakers and the others native Spanish speakers. They also believe that language tutoring, homework help, and writing assistance should be provided for English language students. I also agreed with the point that Ricardo Leblanc-Esparza, a teacher and a principal made. He said,
"Ignoring the child’s native language is a big mistake, especially if that’s the language the student speaks at home."
