I think it's interesting that Obama picked a Republican candidate to head FEMA. I think it's great that Obama has picked someone with over 12 years of experience in emergency management. Choosing someone with that much experience was a smart thing to do. FEMA has an important job. It is supposed to be on the scene to respond to the survivors of disasters right away, making sure that they have the necessary supplies. Hopefully, Fugate can restore FEMA's reputation and gain back the trust in this agency that Brown lost during the Hurricane Katrina fiasco.

Finally, the new Obama administration is phasing out the unfortunate results from Bush's spoils system and using merit as a qualification for getting jobs in government. Craig Fugate has actual experience in the field of emergency relief and in fact was extremely successful in those pursuits- they actually used his Florida plan as a model with regards to the post-9/11 America. This is definitely a step up from our friend Brownie, whose past occupations was judging Arabian race horses. Fugate kind of makes me wish that Katrina had hit Florida instead of Louisiana as bad as it did, which is a REALLY bad thing to wish for. Hopefully the state of our emergency response will improve thanks to Fugate and his past success working with similar programs as FEMA.

I actually think that Craig Fugate is a really good choice for the head of FEMA. It's good that he has experience with these sorts of issues, because I remember we learned that presidential appointees don't always have a lot of experience with the issues they are in charge of. His experience with the many hurricanes in Florida gives him a good perspective on the issues he will face as head of FEMA. He has a lot of knowledge of what needs to be done when an area is facing a natural disaster. If I remember correctly, FEMA has kind of gotten a lot of criticism since Hurricane Katrina, and I think that Fugate will do a really good job and help the agency regain a lot of trust from the American public.

Obama'a nominee for the Federal Emergency Management Agency is Florida's emergency manager Craig Fugate. He is a Republican but has had experience with natural disaster preparation because he helped Florida through numerous hurricanes since 2001. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano called Fugate "one of the most experienced emergency managers in the country". The FEMA has been criticized since Hurricane Katrina when it was unprepared and late to help the victims of the hurricane. R. David Paulison, who was appointed shortly after Katrina, said Fugate is the right choice for the job.
I agree with Obama'a decision to nominate Fugate because of his past experience. It also shows that bipartisanship is important in the administration he is creating.
