Okay, woah! Let me start with the economy:The American economy surrendered 663,000 more jobs in March!!! This is just horrible and the more I want to think it will not happen to my family, I am starting to get scared! The unemployment rate surged to 8.5 percent, the highest level since 1983. The worse part is I feel nothing is working right now, but rationally I know that seeing results will take a while. I feel really bad for Obama right now because I know many people are getting really tired of this economy, but we need to be patient!! Second: This approval in same-sex marriage in Iowa Court.Wooo!! Way to make progress, Iowa. You know, I was very surprised to find out that IOWA was the first Midwest state to approve same-sex marriage. Times really are changing and although it is not all perfect, I think California really initiated the movement to equality for all. Thirdly, I almost cried when I read this article on the immigrant detainee that died in 2005. This truly does show how "death can fall between the cracks in immigration detention." I am mad, sad, and extremely worried that people in this country can treat other like dirt. From feeling happy about the prior story to feeling horrible about the last! I am truly sad about this immigrant, but more importantly, about the situation for all of them.
I was actually pretty surprised when I heard the news about Iowa, mostly becuase I naturally would have assumed the next state to legalize gay marriage would be another coastal state. Even though I know Iowa went Obama in the 2009 presidential election, any state that can be considered mid-west is Bush country in my mind. (It's sort of a prejudice I have against non-coastal states.) I'm thrilled regardless though and hope this trend of legalizing gay marriage continues and gay couples won't have to elope to Canada anymore to gain any recognition. And I hope the drama regarding results of the Proposition 8 election will turn out in favor of gay couples- the difference between amending our state constitution and revising it- but I have a feeling it's going to take another election for real progress to be made in their favor. I guess domestic partnerships are going to have to stick around for a while then.
I heard this news before it was posted on the blog. I was surprised when my Uncle, a gay rights advocate, sent me a text message really early in the morning about Iowa's choice. I'm really pleased that Iowa decided to void the gay marriage ban. I think it's important to try to rid our country of prejudices and allow for equal protection of the law. I found what Mr. Twombley said very encouraging, “There’s something about that, about it happening in the heartland, that has got to accelerate this process for the whole country.” I think with each state that allows for gay marriage may start a movement throughout the rest of the country. This reminded me of the passing of prop 8, which I'm still very disappointed about. I was actually very vexed about what Brian S. Brown said, “The gay marriage movement has once again used the power of the courts to push an untruth on unwilling Iowans. Same-sex unions are not marriages, and Iowans should not be forced by law to treat them as such." He's the executive director of the National Organization for Marriage, and I remember researching this group for the iron triangle project. I think living in a city that is so diverse has made me a more open minded person, and I don't feel like same-sex marriage is being forced upon anyone. If that were the case you could say marriage in general is being forced on gay people. I just hope that California can follow Iowa's decision, as well as the rest of the country, even if it takes time.
