I thought the video was very inspiring. It asked the people watching the video to appreciate what they have. At the end it asked the people watching to do everything in their power to help the world be a better place.
The video showed how much poverty existed in the world by asking the viewers to imagine there were only 100 people in the world. The same proportions that we have today were kept to raise awareness of all the poverty in the world. The video said there would be 50 women and 50 men. Thirteen people would be hungry or malnourished. Fourteen people would be illiterate.
Only 7 would be educated at a secondary level. Twelve of the one-hundred would own a computer and only three would have internet. If you had a roof over your head you would be richer than 75% of the one-hundred. The video also showed that six people would own 59% of the entire wealth of the community.
The village would spend more than $1.12 trillion on military expenses. Only $100 billion would be spent on development aid. The video does what it set out to do. It helps people realize how much they have and appreciate it.
I am lucky to have a roof over my head, a computer with internet, and my parents have a bank account. I know that there are people in the world that are less fortunate then me. It also made me see how much we spend on defense and war rather than helping the earth be a better place. The video serves to help people understand how lucky they really are.
Wow, for lack of better words, that video is simply haunting. It really does put things into perspective. There were certain statistics that truly stood out due to their correlations to our class as well as some that were just bewildering to me that they could even stand true.
Six people own 59% of the wealth in the community.—This reminded me about all of the major corporations who are receiving bailouts from our government. The richest corporations, who own large amounts of the wealth in this country, are asking for money. That is an absolutely ridiculous notion.
$1.12 trillion used for military spending and only $100 billion used on developmental funding.—This is an extreme difference; this also shows the lack of priorities this country has. $1.12 trillion of discretionary spending used for war. Again, that is absolutely ridiculous.
Forty-three people live without basic sanitation. That is 43% of the entire world; nearly half of the world does not have the capabilities to maintain a system of sanitation for their communities.
If you have a fridge, closet, bed and roof over your head you are 75%richer than the rest of the world. Whereas 53 people struggle to live off of at least $2 a day.—So much for that welfare system, so much for means-tested for those entitlement programs.
Basically, this video perfectly depicts the lack of priorities our country as well as the world has. The world is full of so many people; the population of this world increases vastly year by year. The statistics change, but for some reason our priorities don’t. There are still so many people who are barely living with the capablities of sustaining good health, and yet the majority of US dollars goes to illogical causes such as war. Go figure.
This was honestly a little bit scary but it did put a lot of things into perspective. Since we (well, mostly just me) have been talking about college and student loans, I have begun to take for granted that all teenagers are in a similar position, even though in reality only a limited amount of the population can even make it through high school. Living in an urban area I think only further distorts the image we have. Even when I visited some parts of more rural Texas (unfortunately), people would ask "Are you going to college?" instead of "Which college will you go to?"
Since a lot of people get jaded by the better circumstances they feel entitled to, like having checking and savings accounts, and even for teenagers to have steady income when many adults do not, the majority of people in power tend to ignore the less than pleasant realities of life. While I do wish most of these conditions would change, I know that they probably will not mostly because people in power have very little incentive to make any changes. Plus making serious changes would only diffuse their wealth, so change is fairly unlikely.
This video is very moving. It really forces you to think about the world today in a completely different perspective. It's so easy to just think that, oh sure there are some wealthy people and less fortunate people in such a large world. To imagine that the world only has 100 people and to read about the statistics that are related to the 100 people living in this world makes it even more obvious the struggle and hardships those who are less fortunate are facing. But, they created that community of 100 people to have the same proportions that we do today.
43 people of the population would live without sanitation, and 18 would live without an improved water source. That's 43 people who live each day without a healthy sanitation system, that has a negative effect on their health.
Only 7 would be educated on a secondary level, and 14 can't read. We all complain about having to wake up and go to school, do homework, and take tests, yet many people don't even have the opportunity to receive an education like we do.
6, only 6, people own 59% of the wealth of the community. 6 individuals own more than half of the communities wealth, on their own, while so many are struggling to get by. You're richer than 75% of the population if you have a refrigerator, closet, bed to sleep in, and a roof over your head. Only 25% of the population have those things.
The community is willing to spend more than $1.2 trillion on military expenses alone, but only $100 billion on development aid. The community clearly needs development aid more than the military needs the money. The community places an importance on "safety" through its military expenses, yet doesn't take care of the people of the community first.
This video does a good job of really showing people what our world is like. We just assume that there are people struggling, but we fail to realize that the gap between those who are stable and those who are struggling is so large. It really makes you appreciate all you have, because it finally hits you that yes there are people in the world with more than you, but there are so many more people who have less than you do.
