Was 2008 the death of public campaign financing? A former Democratic senator thinks so.

Yes, I think that the author of the article was correct. Since Obama chose to opt out of public financing, he was able to raise a lot of money from donors. If he went with federal matching funds, the race would have probably been a lot closer. Obama was able to appeal to a lot of people, and all the little donations accumulated. Because of this, he was able to spend a lot on advertisements, etc., and that gave him a huge advantage in the election. His success is a demonstration of how far small donations can go towards funding a campaign. I think that after this, candidates will look towards Obama's campaign as an example, and try to get money over the Internet like he did. Obama's campaign shows that candidates have the potential to accomplish a lot more if they do private financing than if they go with public financing. As a result, the private financing system and federal matching funds will become obsolete.
