And here I thought it was bad when the Patriot Act was passed and we were allowed to ignore Habeas Corpus. I know in times where national security is, or seems to be, threatened, the president has taken unprecedented liberties with his position but detaining a person without a crime, or even any charges? That's low even for the Bush administration. Instances like this, regardless of whether or not they placate the American people and their fears of "terrorism" are ridiculous, and bring us miles closer to tyrannical rule. If the president can suddenly imprison someone without even the guise of criminal charges, what other liberties will he feel free to grant himself?
I truly hope the Supreme Court chooses to both overrule this action AND be prepared to offer reparations to Ali al-Marri for the immense suffering endured. Secondly, I think even the intimation of torture in these detention facilities is a huge problem. Whether or not we label detainees "terrorists," they still deserve humane treatments.
