Obama cabinet picks so far

Health and Human Services--Tom Daschle
Department of Homeland Security--Janet Napolitano
Secretary of State--Hillary Clinton
Secretary of the Treasury--Timothy Geitner
National Economic Council--Larry Summers
Secretary of Commerce--Bill Richardson

Pick one of the people above (NOT Hillary Clinton) and look them up. What's their background? What qualifies them for this job? Why do you think Obama picked this person?

Larry Summers

He was the Harvard President from 2001 to 2006. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut and is the son of 2 economists. He is qualified for the job because he has a Ph.D. in Economics. I think Obama picked him to be in his cabinet because he seems well qualified and he was the Secretary of Treasury during Clinton's term.

-Tom Daschle-
Tom Daschle was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota and graduated from South Dakota State University in 1969. He served in the United States Air Force until '72. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1978 and served for eight years. He was elected into the U.S. Senate in 1986. In 1994, he was elected as the Democratic Leader. He also served twice as Majority and Minority Leader. He was an advisor at a law firm in hich he gave advice about issues such as energy, climate change, trade, financial services, telecommunications and health care.

I believe that it is because of his extensive background that Obama has chosen him to be head of the Health and Human Services. He has had much history with many of the issues of the department, so it makes him very fitting for this position.

Barack Obama has chosen Janet Napolitano as the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. In 1993, she was appointed by President Bill Clinton as United States attorney for the District of Arizona. Napolitano has been involved in many well-known court cases and investigations, such as Anita Hill's harassment case and and the Oklahoma City bombing. She has won both gubernatorial races she has run in, beating out Republican challengers in her home state of Arizona. With all of this experience, I think she is adequately qualified for the position she has been appointed to. Napolitano has been a loyal Obama supporter, endorsing him before he was the Democratic front-runner and later becoming one of his busiest surrogates on the campaign trail. Her credentials as a border-state governor, former Arizona attorney general appears well-suited for the role of secretary of Homeland Security. In an article I read about Obama's cabinet picks, it said, "In January, Obama called her 'enormously talented,' and added, 'I think anyone would be happy to have her working for them.'" For these reasons, I believe that Obama made an informed decision when he appointed Janet Napolitano, but we can only wait and see how effective she is in her new position.

Bill Richardson is the current Governor of New Mexico. He ran as the first Hispanic candidate for the 2008 Democratic Party nomination for President of the United States. He worked as a U.S. Ambassador for the United Nations. He has also worked as a U.S. Representative and as the U.S. Secretary of Energy. He was Chairman of the 2004 Democratic National Convention and Chairman of the Democratic Governors Association (2005 and 2006) he helped the Democrats' re-capture the majority of governing positions. He was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for helping with the negotiation of the release of hostages and political prisoners in Iraq, North Korea, and Cuba. He was nominated to be the United States Secretary of Commerce. The United States Department of Commerce concerns business and industry something Bill Richardson has experience in. In 2006, Forbes named Albuquerque, New Mexico the best city in the U.S. for business and careers. The Cato Institute has rated Richardson as one of the most financially responsible Democratic governors in the United States many times. This explains Obama's nomination of Richardson for U.S. Secretary of Commerce. The U.S. Secretary of Commerce is the head of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The Department creates and promotes foreign and domestic commerce. Bill Richardson also has experience working with other countries because he was a U.S. ambassador for the U.N.

Department of Homeland Security--Janet Napolitano.

Currently, Democrat Janet Napolitano is the governor of Arizona. Previously, in 1993, Napolitano was selected as the US attorney for the district of Arizona by President Clinton. In 1998 she ran for state attorney general. She has very strong opinions on immigration. Some of Napolitano's past actions within immigration include signing legislature requiring Arizona employers to check the status of new employees. She has also send the National Guard to the border between the US and Mexico.

One of the USA and Obama's biggest issues is immigration. Therefore, it is appropriate that Napolitano - someone who has strong stances on the subject - would be chosen.
