What college students are reading

A new study just came out, saying that TIME Magazine has become more popular among college students than Cosmo, and that CNN.com is now more popular than perezhilton.com.

Why do you think this is? Why have college students' reading habits changed? Do you think you'll be interested in reading TIME or CNN.com next year?

It was not a surprise to me that TIME Magazine is more popular that Cosmo this year. This fact made me very excited, however. I believe this is in large part the result of Barack Obama’s campaign management. I would say the result of the campaign in general, but the methods Obama used resounded with people, especially younger people. Obama’s campaign was able to reach out to young voters and educate them about his platform through source like YouTube and MySpace. Many college students felt like they were being welcomed into a political process in which they had not been welcomed before. Other cause for the new magazine would be the very fascinating Sarah Palin. Whether you agree/like Palin, you provided a lot to talk about. SNL, late night shows, and other programs made politics seem interesting and many young people began listening. However, I am happy that these college students have listened to the issues and care about what happens to them; they care about things like college loans and the economy. The fact that CNN.com made it to the top ten for the first time is quite simple to explain---Anderson Cooper is the sexiest reported out there! Just kidding- I truly believe these college students want to be more knowledgeable about what is going on in our country and CNN does a very good job in advertising and throwing in that they are “the best on television.” Both CNN and TIME are trusted news brands that people to turn to for information.

I think this election year has also influenced me. Instead of going straight to PEOPLE.com, I visit CNN or Gallup. I will definitely still be interested in CNN.com and TIME next year, when I am in college. However, I have noticed my interest and excitement in the political process has diminished...just a tiny bit. I used to be so excited during the race. I still am very interested in this transition time and in the next administration, but I am scared that I will lose some interest once everything “settles down” and Obama takes charge. I am sure that things will continue to be interesting and that college students continue to be interested. Fingers crossed.
