And now some international news

The Congo is barring UN aid workers from entering, Israeli troops have completely left Gaza, and parts of Obama's inaugural address were censored in China.

I read and watched the clips about China and it was actually really interesting. I already knew that China engaged in censorship, but I didn't know that it was to this extent. They completely disregarded the context of Obama's inaugural speech and it was just for one word. I can't even imagine if I would actually have to live somewhere where the gatekeeper role of the media was so strong that it even censored important moments in history just for a mere couple of words. If only these Chinese people realized some of the things they are actually missing out on.

I found it interesting that parts of Obama's inauguration speech were censored. I didn't really think about how China and other countries would react when Obama said, "Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism." When translated in news print, the words "and communism" were omitted, while the rest of the sentence was translated as above. When translated on news stations, the voice of the translator would fade out while saying those words. After I read the article and thought about previous things I've learned, I was less surprised by China's choice, since officials in China often cut critical material. It also makes some sense that officials would be somewhat worried that Obama won't be as friendly to China as Bush was, considering how many people are thrilled and eager that Bush is no longer in office.

I read the article on Gaza. I think it is completely wrong of Israel to continue to attack Gaza, seeing as to how they agreed to a cease-fire. I did feel it was odd that Israel had agreed to a cease-fire because I know they are not really willing to negotiate with Gaza. According to this article, it seems that I was right about Isreal not wanting to stop attacking Gaza. However, I am left with the question as to why Israel would even bother signing a cease-fire if they weren't planning on following it.
