Arnold wants to change the minimum number of school days

A good article about how this could help to balance the budget here.

I think this a good idea but I also believe it could be a bad idea for teachers. Losing five days causes them to lose money. I think California will have to find a way to compromise. The Governor's plan can ultimately safe California billions of dollars. California requires public schools to have a minimum of one hundred and eighty instructional days. If California decides to accept the Governor's proposal it would be lowered to one hundred and seventy-five. I believe California will have to think long and hard about this proposal. It could do more good than bad for California.

I do not think this would be a good idea to do. Most students value their education and with everything going on with the hard economic times I don't think they want to see their school becoming impacted. Personally I think that they shouldn't make cuts in the schools they should make cuts like in the prisons. They don't need any medical needs or special food, just give them that meat, what was it called, spam. I am not saying that they should treated bad but that is the second place where our i=money in CA goes to.

This seems like a very controversial issue.Cons to this would be that teachers would loose 5 days worth of pay, children would lose five days worth of instruction and maintenance workers would also lose five days of work. Another thing I do not like about this proposal is that if it starts in the 2009-2010 school year, sure, loosing five days won't mean much to high school seniors but what if this becomes the new policy and a child is just starting kindergarten? Does that mean that they will lose 70 days worth of instruction? This could buildup and we could start to see a decline in how much kids know and are learning. This does not seem like a good idea at all. These are the people who will be responsible for running our state in the future. I think that the state government should try and make budget cuts elsewhere before they touch the educational system. I think they could shave off some money from the prison system budget or by raising fines for major criminal offenses.
