Photos of the Bush presidency

With photographers' comments--I thought this was really interesting.

“Mirror, Mirror on the Wall” by Errol Morris was a great article/picture gallery. Lately, I have been analyzing my thoughts on Bush, and realizing how much of what I think of him has been just based on what I have heard from people, and how much is from facts I know. I think, overall (and this is still the case), I didn’t like the majority of his policies or how he handled (or didn’t handle) his administration. HOWEVER, I have realized that just because I disliked Bush the President, I don’t have to dislike Bush the person. The pictures in the article made me feel for the guy-- I mean, if one is in a position of leadership, one can never satisfy everybody. I cannot fathom what tremendous pressure Bush was in-- the saddest part is that in the biggest leadership role there exists in our country, Bush made most of the population angry and frustrated. We blame our economic problems, loss of jobs, position in war, and so much more on this ONE man! Now I realize: yes, much of the United States’ problems are due to some poor choices he made, but we (the American people) are also to blame somewhat. Thank you, Ms. McShane, for posting this -- I have definitely developed a new appreciation for Bush I didn’t have a couple hours ago. I thought of Nixon, especially the movie “Frost/Nixon”. I thought about an interview with Bush, where he is asked what he regrets, etc., in an intense interview. Maybe in a couple years people won’t hate him as much as today or maybe that dislike will grow. What captures my interest the most, however, is how the own man himself (GWB) will see himself. He will always have the pictures to remind him of what occurs during his eight years in office-- of both the good AND the bad times (maybe more bad than good). I cannot help but say, “Poor Bush” (never , ever thought I’d say that).

Mr. Vincent Amalvy (AFP-Agence France-Presse), Mr. Santiago Lyon (AP-The Associated Press), and Mr. Jim Bourg (Reuters) did a wonderful job with these pictures. I liked how there was a mix of very serious, reflective, and even humorous moments. I absolutely loved how although some of the pictures were at the exact same moment, the photographers captured the moment in a different way. For example, there are two pictures of Bush getting the news on 9/11 in an elementary school. The one from the AP is a bit far away, while the one from AFP is a close-up. Both capture the intimate moment, but I like the AFP picture better because you can see the alarm/confusing/chaos/fear/and so much more in Bush’s eyes.

Here are my top 3 pictures (is I had to choose, because I liked them all!):
1. Bush waits behind a camouflage curtain before being announced to the troops at Al-Asad Air Base in Iraq: I like how Bush is looking a bit anxious, and not as comfortable as we were used to seeing him. This is truly a picture in which I saw his anxiety about the Iraq War.
2. Bush looks out the window while flying over New Orleans in 2005, after Hurricane Katrina: I like this picture because it shows the huge responsibility Bush must have felt for Katrina…and I look back on it and so many people judged him, and he did act wrongly, in my opinion, but I feel like the we were all just angry about the situation and thrust the anger at the President, instead of uniting and working together to help the victims. :(
3. Bush writes a note to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice/Bathroom Break!: This was hilarious, but it also is kind of sad and embarrassing. While the world leaders meet at the Security Council meeting at the 2005 World Summit and 60th General Assembly to the United Nations, Bush needs a potty break!!! However, as funny as it seems: (1) it angers me that Bush sometimes was portrayed as a clown and, although he was dumb at times, I felt he got no respect as PRESIDENT and (2) it is sad that a leader cannot empty his/her bladder when he/she needs to. I LOVE this controversial picture!!! I sort of think it was an invasion of privacy…but he knew all these cameras where around. Hopefully, others leaders will learn from his mistake and write stuff like, “America is so great!” :)

* And of course the 9/11-Bush getting the news at a school is my absolute favorite! I just think it is so iconic…for better or for worse.
The close-up on his face is CREEPY!!! I can see all his veins and his eyebrows freak me out. He’s not TOO bad lookin’; the camera is just waaaayyy too close!
