State furloughs

A superior court judge officially declared today that Schwarzenegger can give state employees two unpaid furlough days per month--this apparently amounts to a 10% pay cut. INSANE!

I was listening to this story on the news today: Arnold spoke of his most likely options for trying to prevent having to give out IOU's instead of money and one was the furloughs and the other, cutting jobs. Arnold was quoted saying if he laid off people to equal the pay cuts of working two days less a year, there would be a lot less people complaining becuase, well, there would be a lot less employees. And though this is a ridiculous scenario, the budget situation does need to be rectified, and fast. If cutting pay like this is the ONLY way Arnold thinks California will have enough money to pay its workers, then I guess all employees are just going to have to suck it up for the time being, and let the unions hack it out with him later when we actually have a state budget.

This issue is very controversial and it's disappointing that our economy is so bad it has come to this. This might help balance out the state budget but now those workers are going to put in a very unfavorable financial situation. Some of those families only have one person earning an income and 10% is a huge number. This is really going to hurt the governments relationship with the people. I think it's really hard for the government also becuase their hands are pretty much tied. They are receiving so much less aid from the federal government(their main source of income) and it has really hindered many states. I know it is going to take a lot of work but I really hope that the state of the economy starts to get better.
