No Secretary Daschle

Tom Daschle, former Senate Minority Leader, withdrew his nomination for secretary of Health and Human Services today over tax concerns--he probably would've been confirmed, though. Why do you think he withdrew/was asked to withdraw?

I think that, even though Daschle would still have gotten confirmed, it would set a bad precedent for Obama's new team to have these (minor) scandals surrounding their confirmations. When Obama was elected, there was so much press about ushering in a new quality of government, but so far, we just have a bunch of standard employees who display of penchant for tax evasion. There has been a lot of bad press for Obama's administration about this and though he still has high approval and confidence ratings, the "honeymoon" period is going to end very soon if he is seen as incapable of changing his administration as he has promised he would. Daschle was a threat to this, and I think he was pressured into withdrawing his nomination to save face for Obama and his team.
