I think this is a prime example of the politics involved in making a budget. Like we discussed in class, a lot of people are getting paid a ridiculous amount of money not to do their jobs, while in the business world, if people were to fail to do something major like this, they would be fired. Everyone knows the economy is bad, and everyone knows that the Democrats and Republicans will probably never reconcile themselves on how to spend some small portion of the budget, but the state is being forced to hand out IOUs, pink slips and demand unpaid furloughs- the situation is pretty dire. What we need to get a budget passed are a group of Democrats or Republicans to step up and take one for the team. Maybe the Republicans need to give up on their adamant call for tax breaks, or they need to be willing to meet in the middle becuase by the time this budget is passed, it will already be time to write up a new one.
It's a shame that this is what the state of California has resorted to. Although 10,000 is not a very large amount in perspective to how many people actually reside in California, it’s still a substantial amount. What’s even more shameful is that the elected people who are supposed to be doing their jobs to help bring California out of it’s current economic strife are doing the minimum to do so quickly and efficiently. This entire article basically summed up the motives of these Senators and Assemblymen to selfish desires to be reelected. Their job is to create a budget plan for the state of California, and all this article spoke about was how they were voting merely to ensure their safety as political leaders. It’s disappointing that these leaders can’t forget about their lives to help the rest of the people they’re supposed to be serving.
Actually, I just read that the state legislature approved a budget today and Arnold Schwarzenegger likes it and is expected to sign it. Knowing this, it's going to be interesting to see what the state legislature does with the jobs and the projects and everything. The article said that originally, Schwarzenegger was putting off sending out pink slips because he thought the legislature would pass a budget, and then decided not to. I'm wondering if maybe the layoffs can be revoked since the budget was passed, but probably not, because the state has no money. I also thought it was interesting that they passed a budget that included a lot of tax increases, because that was the main disagreement. The majority of California citizens are probably very unhappy about that, but ultimately, it had to happen.
I also feel really sorry for the state senators because they had to be in session for so long. But at least we got a budget out of it.
This is very, very irritating. California's budget was due many months ago. It seems almost near impossible that there will be a budget at all before the new budget is due. I think is will cause many, many more problems. If the CA state legislature hasn't been able to come up with a budget for this year, how can they come up with a new one in the summer? The failure to agree on a budget for this fiscal year has lead to a huge amount of government layoffs. This worries me a lot because I know of people with government jobs. They already make very low wages and are forced to take days off with out pay, and now this.
This article was written right before California finally passed a budget. From what we talked about in class, I understood the situation as California having something in its state constitution that requires it to have a budget drafted every year. The people who had the responsibility of accomplishing this just did not come through as required. This budget was supposed to be done by last July, and I cannot see how these people see that it is acceptable to slack off, reaping the immense and exaggerated benefits from the jobs they have chosen not to do. Maybe they have forgotten that are essentially in charge of the affairs of the entire state of California and its people. Now, because of this and the huge budget deficit, thousands and thousands of people are losing their jobs. People in my family, who are very humble and hardworking people, have definitely felt the effects of this. I am thankful to say that no one in my family has lost a job yet, but that is as of before these dreaded "pink slips" are to come out. However, many hours have been cut, and someone in my family who used to work full time now has only about two or three part-time shifts per week. That earns us nothing. Because of this and the lives that the "elite" in Sacramento get to enjoy, I have to say that I am frustrated and angry to see how selfish people can be.
