The candidates went to dinner last night...

They gave speeches that were pretty funny--they made fun of themselves and each other. It's all on YouTube: McCain's speech and Obama's speech.

John McCain was very funny for the first six minutes or so, and very eloquent in the rest of the time he had to speak. Ironically, I think his speech at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Dinner was better than all three of his performances at the presidential debates. He didn’t stumble as much as he usually does. He is pretty good at timing, which makes or breaks comedy. Wow! He actually complemented Obama, and said “I’ve had a few glimpses of this man at his best. I admire his great skill, energy, and determination. It’s not for nothing that he’s inspired so many folks in his own party and beyond.” John McCain didn’t make any awkward facial expressions like he did on Wednesday as he spoke. That is always good! I enjoyed how he introduced Obama. “I have to confess I looked at it [Obama’s comedy routine]…You all are about to witness the funniest performance in the 63 year history of this event.” Wait…or did he really want to put more pressure on Obama? Nah…it was just all joking I think. I also enjoyed watching Hilary Clinton laugh at McCain’s jokes about Bill Clinton and even Obama laugh at jokes about himself. I think that in any other setting these jokes would have been inappropriate, but in this environment it worked.

Obama was even more hilarious. OMG! He made fun of his ears and his own name. I mean…awesome! “Can someone tell me what happen ed to the Greek columns that I requested?” This of course was referring to the line in one of Sarah Palin’s first speeches. Speaking of Palin… From the doorstep, “you could see all the way to the Russian tearoom.” Ouch! He also poked fun at McCain’s age, Bill Clinton’s desire to a third term, and the opponents’ ability to sit down without pre-conditions. Gosh, he had so many great jokes that I could not keep up with many of them. I could tell by some of McCain’s facial expressions at this time that he wasn’t as genuinely humored by some of his opponent’s jokes. And, yes, I agree, Obama is a bit “too awesome.”

I wish the American public could all see this…go out and watch!!! So, who won the speaking contest? Obama, hands down! He was fantastic, but… McCain was pretty good too! Why couldn’t one of the speeches been replaced with comedy contests.

I watched Senator Obama's speech at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Dinner. I thought that the dinner allowed both candidates to ease the tension that was created during the third presidential debate. The jokes that Obama made were pinpointed towards himself Joe Biden,John McCain, and Sarah Palin. He mentioned the infamous Russia joke with Sarah Palin. He also made fun of his own ears and compared them to Alfred E. Newman's. (I looked up Alfred E. Newman later and laughed at is joke) The dinner was a great way for the candidates to address the citizens of the United States. The speeches made it so that the American public could see the presidential candidates outside of serious matters.
