It's not just you

A new article says that most people may not be able to afford college in the near future. What role could our government play in helping people go to college? Should this be the government's job? What could be the down side of having a country full of people who can't afford to go to college?

This is turning into a big concern. I don't know how anyone expects families to be able to afford to put their children though college if people's income is staying the same and the cost of college is rising dramatically. I do think the government has some responsibility in helping families afford the cost of college, but only state colleges, not private ones. Also, this could later turn into a much bigger problem. If less people can afford to go to school, then we're going to have less people qualified for certain jobs. Older people are going to have to stay at their jobs longer because younger people won't be able to take their place because they are not going to be qualified.

This is a hard thing on americans and people who are coming from low incomes. i think that we try hard for something this harmful to fail. I think the government should try and solve this by making different plans about money. They should come up with ways to give money put and this is bad for my little sister's who are going to be applying for college and this is a big stress.

This is a horrable situation that we are in right now. Something really needs to change and fast. Our country is in debt and there is not much the government can do at this moment. This should be the governments job because most universities are owned by the government and it is their fault that we are in this situation. The down side of having a country full of people who can't afford to go to college is that they will be only be able to get minimum age job and there will be open spots that many people will not be able to fill.
Because of this situation, if I am able to pay for college major in economics, minor in U.S. government. And from there, I could hopefully work in government and college affordable for many people.

Well I think that more people should be able to have the chance to go to college because we are the future. I think that the government should play a role in our education, by that I mean that they should be able to help us pay for our education. The bad thing about having a country full of people who can’t afford to go to college is that it means our country is poor and the people in it are too. I think that our economy is already screwed but maybe with our government helping us with our education, at first our country will struggle but after with people who have an education it will be easier for us to build our economy because they can get good jobs and we will be getting people who get can get money on their own. i think that the government should help us because they already use our tax paying money for a lot of other stuff, they might as well use it to better our education. i also think that with their help more people would be going to school so i do think they play an important role in our educational lives.

Yeah, I think that most people can not pay college right now because of the economy situation that is going down. The government has to do something about this.Like let the students that already got accepted to college to let them go.I dont think thats fair for the students.I fwe have people that can't afford college than whats the point of the students studying and we will have a bad society because people are going to get old and they are not going to be able to work. The students wont get the job because they weren't educated.

I thought that this article was really interesting because it applies to me and my everyday life. Its kind of scary to think that most of our country cant afford to go to college. I think that the government should help pay for our college tuition, because its not our fault that our parents cant pay for our school. Some people have parents who are single parents which make it harder for them to pay for their kids education. the bad thing about it is that its going to make the US's economy worse.i just hope that the government does help us be able to continue on in our studies because in the future its going to benefit us.

The role that our government should play in helping people to go to college is that they should help us out more, like give us some more financial support. Or pay for some of our college education and later on when we have the money or even after one graduates from college they have to pay it off. This should be the government's job because they're kind of the voice of the people and plus they're taking money from us already so they should give back and help us out. The downside of having a country full of people who can't afford to go to college is that it shows how bad our economy has become. Also that a lot of people are in financial need and probably parents who have kids aren't able to go to a good school or even go to school because they don't have enough money.

i think that the government should help find ways to make college cheaper for students. i thknk having a country with people not goin to college could ruin the u.s. because then there wouldnt be that mayn educated people. i think that college shouldnt even cost that much koney why should you have to pay for school? you shouldnt have to pay to learn. i think the government should make it so that if you dont have alot of money then school would be free for you.

I think the government is totally to blame for the crisis that is going on with the colleges. I think that they should have saved money like they do with social security. Maybe there is still a possibility of them being able to do that right now. What I do know is that nothing is being done when the colleges cut back on the classes and the teachers. Instead of cutting back they should have invited more students to come to the universities increasing their money income. Why would they cut students and lose the more money that the universities would make if they had more students? I know all of this is probably because people can’t afford college and that is probably because of the budget crisis. Hopefully this will end soon because if this budget crisis continues we will have a nation of people who have never gone to college.

I seriouslly cant believe that college has gotten so expensive. It is crazy to even think that it will cost more, but that is just the reality. I think that increasing college cost is a bad idea, becuase more people will not go and they will not strive to be better.I belive that we need more educated people in the world. I think that this whole budget cut is a bad i dea and i think that they should come up with a better plan. I know that the bad economy is affecting everyone, but i do not think this is a positive way to go about things becuase, this might help us a little bit right now, but it will have a big, big effect on the future for example my kids, thats if i were to have any. But my point is that instead of making college more expensive , they should make it more accesable.

Whenever articles about the increasing costs of education are published, I always become upset. In the case of public universities, the prospect of turning first to cut education costs when presented with a debt is deplorable. Education is possibly the most important thing we can receive (better jobs anyone?). I have also heard a lot of controversy from the media, saying for the first time ever, our generation will be less educated than our parents. But when we see the progressively higher and higher costs of remedying that situation, what other options do we have? Get the education, while simultaneously building a debt so high, it will takes years to pay off, regardless of profession?

Our government needs to reassess their fiscal priorities and seriously consider the ramifications of making higher education so much less accessible. As for private schools, the only real option for cost management is to hope they follow suit if the price of public universities were to increase (not very likely) or to establish some basic regulation (what it might have to turn to).

Mostly, I hope they fix this before next year. Wishful thinking, I know.

Our government should make it a priority for all students to be able to afford college. It is sad and also scary that in the future, less and less people will be able to go to college. This should very much be the governments job because then if people do not attend college, it will be harder for them to get better paying jobs, or actually become unemployed. The more people are unemployed, the more the government will have to spend of welfare and HUD and etc. This will lead to less people working eventually, and less people in government..etc. This is horrible! People should be able to go to college. AMEN.

I think it's very scary to see just how much tuition costs have been raised over the years. A college education is vital in order to have a professional career but its harder for families to pay when college costs so much. The increasing inability to pay for college will be detrimental to the future of our country. The less educated people are the faster we will loose our academic and business competitiveness on a global scale. I think that the government should try to make college more affordable for its citizens. They could try to give larger taxbreaks for families with students in college or they can help lessen the costs of running a school so that the tuition will be lowered. Such as, paying for an electric bill or giving them larger grants.

The economic slump in the United States is affecting everyone. Budget cuts are being made left and right, and students are suffering because of it since money is being cut from education. It is really sad to know that the yearly family income increase doesn't make up for the rising cost of higher education. Our government should make college more affordable to students. The cost of college is too much for all families especially those who are low-income and middle-income. This should be the government's job because the more people who receive a higher education, the higher the income families will have, which will lead to a better economy for the U.S. People in higher corporate jobs will spend more. Investing in students who want higher education now will make a positive impact for the US in the long run.

The government could continue to help students pay for college. I think it should be the government's job to make college affordable to students. I understand that the United States is going through a recession but I don't see how lowering the budget for education will help the economy. I believe that in order to be competitive with other countries higher education has to be affordable. The downside of having a country full of people who can't afford college is that more jobs will go to other countries. It won't let us be competitive with those countries. It will result in the United States losing more money. The U.S. government should also make sure that the quality of education doesn't change. This has to be made a priority so that the United States can still be competitive with other countries.

Based on the fact that promotions and new ideas - which ultimately feed the economy - are achieved through higher degrees, our government should help fund college-level programs. This is the government's job; it affects them as much as it affects every other American. For example, people who deserve to be in the upper government levels are those who have a college education. Although people who learn by doing do become successful in the workforce, a college experience can be even more beneficial. College gives individuals a chance to experience more than just their field. They could take a couple of classes in business as well as something as arbitrary as underwater basket weaving. This diversity in their education gives them different perspectives that cannot be achieved by only studying their future field. Without a number of people with college degrees, the creativity will be somewhat stunted. Those who attend college can experience many different classes and learn from very experienced professors and classmates.
