Republicans threaten a filibuster
Looks like the loan to the car industry isn't going to happen--too many Republicans in the Senate aren't in favor of it. Do you think it's a good or a bad thing that filibusters can happen? Why do you think the Senate rules allow the minority party to prevent bills from becoming laws?

Too be honest, its good that the car industries aren't recieving that $15 billion because the United States is in recession and we are broke so we would increase our debt. I think that the Senate using the majority ruling is a good idea because everyone gets to share their opinion on how they feel about the bill. I also believe that the filibuster is good because it controls how long people can talk.
I believe that a filibuster can be good and bad at the same time. This is because you really only get to see how one party feels about and if they like it or not. For one they could be good because the bill that they might be trying to past is bad for everyone but at the same time it could only really favor that party. If they keep going on forever no one will really get to vote and if it is something that should get past it wouldn’t be. I think they let this happen because they are lazy and wants to get rid of them haha. No but really they might do this because that way they can filter out the bills that need to be taken care of instead of wasting time on a bill that is not really that import at the moment.
I think it’s a good idea and also a bad idea that filibusters happen. I believe that it’s good thing that the bill didn’t get passed because if they are running out of business then they should close it down or stop making cars that will cost a lot of people in the future meaning gas wise. The Senate has more experience and their less crazy! They don’t get into debates in such drastic matters so I think that’s why they are the ones that can prevent bills from passing. But I just hope that the people that might lose their jobs receive help because some of them have been working for a long time in those car companies.
I am not that happy to hear that the $14 million loan for GM is not going to happen, because the majority of Republicans did not agree with it. I think that it is a good idea that filibusters can happen, mainly because if the majority of the people do not agree on something, why spend time talking about it. It will be better to stop talking, and have the Senate focus on other issues. Like the article said, a lot of peole are going to have to loose their jobs (people that worked for the company). The economy these days is not that good, and having more people loose their job is not going to be that good for the economy.

I guess that it is a good idea for filibusters to happen, because if members from the Senate do not agree with it, then they should stop. I am not happy that the $14 million loan was rejected because many people are jobless and are now stuck struggling to find new jobs, which I think is going to be impossible.
I am still a little confused about why the Republicans do not want to give the "Big Three" a bailout. I thought that Republicans favored large corporations and big business in general. Considering this, it is possible that these companies may face bankruptcy if they are not bailed out. The fact that this situation can be decided by a filibuster does not sound right to me. It sounds as if the side with the most rhetorical endurance, shall we say, will get their way, rather than the side that makes the most sense. In a way, I feel sorry for Chrysler, GM, and Ford, but I also feel that they should have paid more attention to how the world has been changing and been more on top of their finances.
I think it is a good and bad thing that filibusters can happen. If people dont want a bill to become a law, this is a way to prevent it and show how they feel. At the same time, it can be unreasonable because they can end up speaking for days and says at time, and people have to sit their and continue listening. I think the Senate rules allow the minority party because of filibusters.
Well, considering myself a Democrat, I'll admit I was pretty thrilled when I heard that in Senate, Democrats had almost been able to prevent filibuster, but when that faded, I realize how bad of a concept it is. The whole point of Senate (and the House) is to hear opinions and views from people our congressmen represent- us. And if such a thing exists that prevents a government from hearing the will of its people, I do believe we need to change something.
I did argue with myself though that a mixed Senate can ultimately prevent many (Democratic or Republican) legislature from passing, so this is a tool that helps things get done, even if it simultaneously quells the opposition. I have to agree with the efficiency of filibuster though.
Third parties just don't represent enough people to dominate Congress with their agendas. Their issues just don't pertain to enough of Americans to warrant passing what they want, all the time. Filibuster is one of the tools that proportion their time to their spread.
I do not think filibusters are a very good idea. I think it is poitnless to have someone in a meeting stand up and talk all of a sudden and start talking and probably talk about something that is not important, and is not relative to the meeting. Can't a group of men and women who are grown up makevup their minds about something or say I do not want this or lets take a vote on this? They are acting worse then an group of first graders, and I work with them so I know what thier like, great but loud. Filibusters are just really pointless ways of getting something from not happening.
I believe that filibusters are a negative thing. It is not fair to deprive people of their ability to vote. This is considered to be against the law if it is done to the public. Why should it be considered legal for the Senate? Democracy is meant to allow everyone to have an equal and fair say. Filibusters are neither equal nor fair because it doesn't allow one to even state their opinion on an issue. We should be able to accept the outcome, even if it's something we don't agree with.
I believe that the senate allows the minority party to prevent bills from becoming laws because if they were to vote the minority party would always be outnumbered.
