Looks like the New York Times has been thinking about it too!

I think Ann Althouse's argument for women to not be drafted is hypocritical. She says that it is unfair for women who would not voluntarily enter the war to be drafted and expected to participate. I do not see how this is different than drafting men. Not all men want to fight in wars. Also, even though I would prefer to not get drafted in the future, I do think that only drafting men is sexist. Drafting both men and women is more of an example of gender equality. Also, I doubt that if women were to be drafted they would only be nurses or work in kitchens. Our society knows that women are capable of more than that.
Many have thought about a female draft. Having a female draft isn't a very good idea. Mainly, because if women and men are drafted then the children will stay without any parents. Also, women are needed to have children. If many women leave we will have another population gap as we did before in our history. Hopefully, women aren't drafted because I know I would not want to go.
Women being drafted is a big issue that is really debatable. I heard that even female organizations are split into this decision. When I first think of it, I decide immediately that women should be drafted because all of us are equal. Then I started to think of the consequences if women would be allowed to be drafted. I admit that the woman from the University of Winconsin said some consequences that may be possible. However, I still think that these consequences may be worked out. People who are being drafted should be disciplined to just fight for their country and be professional to just do their work, and should not let themselves be bothered or be affected by their co-draftees, whether they are male or female. In our discussion last class, I also thought about what dj said and she is right. She said that if parents are more hard and tight to their daughters, what will happen to their sons. She said mostly sons are getting killed in street or anywhere since parents are not really tight on them. Same true with the military draft. The government is like the parents, the women are like the daughters, the men are like the sons. I appreciate that they are really concern about us women, but how about the men. They also said that women should not die because women are the one who multiply the population, but men are also part of that. That is why God created male and female as one and equal, so male and female can create a new life. A female alone can't create a new life. I disagree with the woman when she said that Senator Obama is just doing political gesture that is why he is voting yes on female draft. I believe that Senator Obama (soon-to-be president, whooooh!) really wants change. He is right that if the African-Americans did it in the past, women can also too.
In this case I would have to agree with McCain. Obama's plan to have a female draft for "selective services" sounds ridiculous. If he wants a female draft women should be eligible for all jobs in the military. His idea of having women work at a desk job or in the kitchens sounds sexist. Also, if all the men are dying and going off to war we need to save our population. We will not be able to preserve this population if we are sending everyone off. Another problem with that is who would take care of the children or the elderly once our entire youth is gone and not just a portion of it.
I think that women who are sent to the military are not going to be treated equally to men who are in the military. First of all, through out history women have been seen as weak. If women go to the military I think that men are going to feel some sort of a responsibility to women. I think that the men in the military would not be too happy if a woman gets injured during battle. I think that women SHOULD be treated equally in the military. I think that both men and women are capable of performing the same duties. Women may be more sensitive to certain things but they can sure go out and fight for our country!! If police stations hire women and treat women the same as men, I think that in the military WOMEN SHOULD BE ALLOWED! WOMEN ARE STRONG AND CAN DO IT!
